My filters keep turning brown with a sediment/muck type of build up. The tank runs clean whether I change/clean them or not. I rarely do water changes, it's had maybe 3 x 50% changes this year as it always tests perfect. I've got a soil substrate with sand, coarse rock and pebbles to try and create an "ecosystem" of sorts. There would be at least 100 fish in there (my bristle nose are breeding like crazy), red cherry shrimp (too many to count as there's always 10 berried females at one time), and dozens of other various fresh water fish.
I built this tank to be low maintenance due to family and work commitments so I don't want to have to keep replacing filters every 2 weeks if I don't have to.

Any tips or advice on things to check or change to get longer out of the filters?
Or should I just leave them and not change them?
