Looking at getting into fly fishing after inheriting a lot of vintage fly gear from my late Grandad. Done quite a lot of research, and the general consensus seems to be that a 9ft 5wt rod is the way to go. However, one of my grandads rods looks to be 7ft5’ 4/5 wt.

1) Is this rod too short to be using as a beginner? Where possible for now I would like to avoid splashing out on a rod if I can make the above work. He does have another two, but these are 9ft5’ 6/7 wt rods and above. I plan to fish smallish still waters in the UK as well as rivers.

2) My understanding was that fly reels can be 4wt or 5wt etc – as per the markings, would this rod be suitable for both a 4 and 5 wt reel?

Any advice would be massively appreciated!
