Just curious. I haven’t had a betta fish since I was a kid, maybe 20 years ago. I remember they would always flare whenever I put a mirror in front of them. I just recently got a betta and he doesn’t flare at all.

Bettas were initially bred for fighting, with aggression being a prioritized trait. With betta fighting being far less common nowadays, it’s reasonable to assume they’re bred for color & shape, rather than aggression, leading to a gradual decrease in aggression over time.
I can probably count on a single hand how many times my betta has flared since I’ve had him (for about a year).
