Hello, found this rod in my fathers garage in excellent condition. Old gentleman says he bought it many years ago in a shop at the erriff river in Ireland and fished it there for a few days. Unfortunately, there is no reel and line, he borrowed them from the lodge owner there back in the days.

I never had a two handed fly rod in my hands, and the different line/shooting head options are more than confusing to me.

What can I do with this rod? I'm going for holidays to the Mediterranean and as well a few weeks to Sweden next year, can I use it for salt shore fishing? It's to heavy for sea trout in Northern Europe, isn't it? Besides salmon rivers, what about stillwater shore and from boat in Sweden?

I want to keep it simple with the lines, so I noticed the airflo rage tri tip system, can I combine this with the rod? Rod says 8.5 oz, which is 241g in metric, but what does that even mean? The airflo tri tip for 8/9wt states a head weight with tip of 38g, so that doesn't make sense to me with the 8.5 oz. The interchangeable tips of that line are the normal airflo poly leaders, aren't they? So from there I go with tippet to fly?

Your help would be much appreciated, thanks a lot

That is a very old sage salmon rod, personally as someone from the PNW I really want that thing, because that rod is basically the rod that brought two handed fishing to the region, and it was the rod the Skagit head system was developed on.

  2. I believe it’s a west coast float rod just based on the length. 9wt would be overkill for anything in the great lakes area.

That’s a two handed sage, noice. Salmon fishing, look up the grain charts for a skagit head to fit this rod, grains and lengths are the keys to getting a proper skagit head. These are great Spey rods for water loaded casting

If I remember correctly the 8 1/2 oz designation on the sage rods is the rid weight. I e. my 5 wt DS2 shows 3oz. I suspect calling a fly shop like Reds Shed or one of the other spey rod outfits in Wa/Or will get you a good answer and line pairing, especially if you order from them since that’s a well known still sought after rod. You could compare it to another slower action 14 ft 9 wt and compare those recommendations for a Skagit system or Scandi…. I too want that rod and look around for them now and again.
