I can’t get a clip to fit into the cupped mouth. I was thinking what if I made a small loop from some mono line (25lb) attached to this line tie, and then flipped to this loop of line instead?

So instead of tying direct to the line tie I would be using a clip to clip into a loop of mono line that's tied to the line tie of the lure. Sort of a makeshift extension of the line tie itself. Would this be a bad idea?
