I’ve wanted one since I started fishing a few months ago but I told myself I wouldn’t even consider it until I actually started catching fish. Now that I’ve stared to actually consistently catch fish this has been in the back of my mind 24/7. Really want to pull the trigger and treat myself to it but I’m unsure of what rod to pair it with. I have a lews Mach 2 casting rod that I don’t use, would that be an okay match? I know a lot of people have expensive st croix rods or something but at the moment it’s one expensive purchase at a time for me haha. Or I guess would people suggest I get the rod before the reel??

  1. Love mine. Expensive gear is, of course, better quality and tends to last longer. However, I have cracked tons of fish on a cheap ass Abu Garcia Vengeance rod (I have St Croix Rods also haha) that I got on clearance at Walmart for 30 bucks. Take your time buying higher end gear. Better gear doesn’t elevate your angling skills. That comes with practice, trial and error, learning fish behavior, presentation, reading the water/weather conditions, etc. Good luck and I’m glad you’ve found such an awesome sport/hobby to enjoy…

If youre serious about the hobby and know that 10 years down the line you’re still gonna be flipping tips and ripping lips and you go fairly often, Do it. Buy once, cry once.

If you get out every other month or so for a few hours I would stick with a cheap combo- by the time you put enough wear on the cheapo to give it some real problems, 2 generations of curados will have gone by/youll be able to pick up the current gen for cheap.

It’s not what people think about as a beginner reel but if you can afford it, go for it. You’ll love it for years.
