Few nights ago I was out at the pier toggin when I hooked up on a nice 18 incher. Literally instantly on the hook set the reel gave in, I had to hand line the fish in lol. I was using a penn pursuit iv 4000, now I looked into this and it seems like this problem is happening a lot more commonly with this particular reel than any other. I got a replacement I'm going to give it another go with a little less drag this time and hopefully that solves the issue.
