Was at the beach before daybreak. Not much action in the water. I was throwing jerkbaits and spoons. I really want to catch something sizable on a lure because I haven’t yet. I’ve only been at this a month. (Surf fishing. I fish largemouth too). But I put a lot of time and studying into learning about surf fishing. I catch a lot of perch on a Carolina and I’ve managed to catch about 6 yellowfin croaker as well.
As I reach my endpoint down the beach, I spot a bunch or trash. I head over and there were cans a bottles and debris abound. Even a couple half full bottles of lighter fluid. Tide was coming up too. And lying amongst everything was a thick black 55gal trash bag still folded up and new. So I filled it to the top and drug it back to my truck. Decided to cast out one more time, tied on the trusty Carolina again, 🙄 and caught my largest perch so far! It stabbed me, I pulled the hook and let him go, then went home.
But I just had to go check out this other spot I hadn’t been to yet. Cost me a couple bucks to park. I tied on a nice white jerkbait and started casting. Was only there about 30 min and something good grabbed my lure. I started cranking because I did not want this big guy to gain any slack. It jumped a couple times but it was foamy and I didn’t get a good look. I thought I had finally caught my first halibut! It was only about 10”-15” but that was fine. I finally caught a target species and I did it with a jerkbait. My drag was perfectly spooling just enough ease the fish inshore while I frantically reeled it in as fast as I could. Turns out it was not a halibut. It also was not a yellowfin croaker! I caught my first corbina. And I caught my first surf fish with a jerkbait! Why a corbina decided to snuggle with my jerkbait, I have no idea. It was a dumb move. It is now in my fridge about to be consumed.
Today started off pretty monotoned and turned into something very vibrant. I learned with quail hunting what I’m learning with surf fishing. You need to put in your miles to gain success.
