Fish ID

I caught this fish in the surf near San Francisco this morning. I asked a guy who was also fishing what it was and he said jack smelt. Based on some quick googling I found that it might be a surf smelt but it still looks a little different than the pics online.

Interested to learn more about this guy. Released it if anyone was wondering.
