So I gave a crack at setting up my rod on my own, never done it before. Should I buy more line because it looks like the reel needs more?
Also, do these lures tie onto the string or onto the hook and do I need a sinker with it?

First, welcome to the party. Get ready to be broker than you’ve ever been because this shit is addicting

Definitely more line. Tie directly to the little metal loop above the lures head. I don’t know about adding a weight. Probably not. I’ve never used this specific lure type before

That is a 5000 reel which is quite big. The size goes up with the number (I use between 2000 and 4000 for lake river and pond fishing) that reel needs about double that amount of line. You want about a quarter inch of space left showing of the flat part of the reel (the lipped part is for line to come off reel so that plus a quarter inch). As for that lure you can tie right to it but I’d tie a loop knot to let the lures action move more fluently (basically a fisherman’s knot with one more step) It does look awfully small for how large your reel is but it really depends on what lb test your line is really
