First time ever surf fishing, I was beyond excited. This Permit is probably only the third fish I've ever caught in salt water, and by far the biggest.
Took a break from swimming to cast a few more times as the light changed, and this guy bent the rod nearly in half. I was using a 6ft five-piece travel rod that looked like it was ready to snap at any moment, it wasn't at all suited for the task but got the job done. Luckily I had it spooled with 25 lb mono. After fighting it for a while, I basically had to point the rod at the fish and walk up the beach to tow it in.
Caught it on a Pompano rig with gulp shrimp and fish bites.
…Now I'm looking for a proper surf rod to travel with (thinking about the Rigged and Ready Max S)…
It has lit a fire in me, all I can think of is fishing from the beach!
