It at one time had some far superior alternatives like the old 3m black sand.
Problem with blasting sands like this is that they can harm certain livestock like corydoras who sift a lot – this sand is quite intentionally sharp and can be an irritant.

This is my favorite substrate. It does not encourage diatoms. It rinses much cleaner than sand. The dark substrate encourages more intense coloration in some fish, like rummy nose tetras.
