Just started fishing a couple months ago. And just caught my first catfish. Any idea what kind it is? I googled it and think its either a white or a channel. I live in northern illinois.
Any ideas?
noh clue but would low to have catfish in my area are they fun? good eating?

Channel, you can tell cause of the forked tail and the silver top and white belly. I haven’t caught one of these yet just yellow and black bullhead catfish this summer. Really cool catch, I like catching catfish with pork chops and lions.

Channel white cats tend to have wider jaws and don’t have a overbite like a channel cat

Catfish on a whopper plopper is crazy cool. Easy way to catch cats is just throw some bait on the bottom and wait. The stinkier the better. Chicken livers and garlic salt is an easy catfish bait to make. Usually cheaper than a dozen night crawlers too. Some people add red koolaid or jello powder to the mix.
