The three pictures above were on July 1, then July 3, and now today July 7. I was doing daily water changes and optimizing the tank, I put sponge over my filter inlet (I think this caused the original rips) and changed plants to silk plants. July 3 I stopped doing daily water changes and started dosing melafix in the tank but things seem to be getting worse? He’s a very high strung beta and frequently flares at his reflection in the glass, I have tried putting more plants around the perimeter to combat this but I also saw him biting his tail too. There are tips and fin loss but not really discoloration so unsure if it’s fin rot or just from excessive flaring and tail biting? He is eating fine and swimming fine…. If I need treatments what is the best options?

Tank specs: 3 gallons (I know 5 recommended), 75 degrees, there is a sponge filter, he’s alone in the tank, water is very clean I check the nitrates and such, all silk decorations, feed twice a day with beta pro shrimp patties 4-5 each feed….

  1. He’s nipping. 75 is too cold. That could be causing him stress. Melafix is bad for bettas, that could be irritating him also. Try keeping the lights off most of the day to minimize reflections. Add more resting places so he doesn’t have to work so hard to surface. Stop the melafix. Raise the temperature to 78-80.
