So I don't know much about fishing. I have also been trying to fish on and off my whole life, over 50 yrs. I live on a lake, and have about 100 yards of bank that I have access to. People on boats do come by, but not a lot.
Once in a while I catch something, sometimes it's a bass.
There is not really any growth on top of the water and it really differs year to year in the water. We had a year where the water was full of plants and this year almost nothing. There are no rocks or big cover. The bottom is clay or mud.

The fish in the video is probably the first and the biggest I caught on this spot. I let it go about 5 minutes after. I did get excited, not gonna lie.

I don't know what I am doing or what I should be doing. If you got a minute, maybe provide some clues and hints.

  1. You let that bass flounder around for 5 minutes before releasing it? Start by practicing better fish handling.

Honestly, if you’re brand new, i would pick a few YouTube videos to watch. “Bass Fishing for Beginners” or just “Fishing for Beginners” if you don’t want to specialize in bass.

I don’t wanna just jump down your throat but whatever…this is isn’t how you handle fish. Catch it, take a picture while you’re holding it, and either release it then or give it a bonk, take it home, and cook it up

  4. Got a couple folks talking shit, but if you are new, you probably don’t know better. First, don’t leave them out of the water for long, as in not longer than a minute. Next, if you are going to put them in some water, use water out of the pond/lake/river to do it. Chlorine and additives in tap water will kill the fish. Good luck!

Remember, man, these are living creatures. Always treat with care and respect with proper handling. Even if you’re taking them home to eat.

  6. Don’t keep fish out of the water that long. Why would you hang onto it for 5 minutes?
