I live in proximity to rivers like the stanislaus and the upper mokelumne. It’s considered the western sierras and majority of the river access are narrow and deep with big boulders like the video linked of a YouTuber I’m almost positive is on the Stanislaus shoutout to Zachangler if your on here , how in the world do you fly fish these rivers ? Some areas make it impossible to land a fish do I indicator ? Throw a streamer ? Swing a fly ?

  1. I almost always fish upstream, maneuver to where I can get a cast in with a drift. Summer is dries only, winter would be indicator nymphing, although in narrow and deep water euro can work well.

Plan your approach to a spot so you can land a fish and get a drift, then figure out how to get up to the next spot. If you work upstream you can stay behind the fish and lower, and not spook them.
