Chicken lovers are working, now I just need to figure out how to keep them on the hook longer

I’ve always had trouble keeping chicken livers on the hook. A friend of mine wraps his baits in bits of panty hose, and puts his hook through that. I may give it a try.

I would suggest trying circle hooks if you haven’t yet. The geometry of the hook makes them almost self-setting, and any way that the fish thrashes, drives the hook in deeper. I don’t have a ton of catfish experience, but anecdotally, circle hooks have outperformed standard J-hooks for me. Treble hooks have worked well also, and it’s a tossup between these and circle hooks.

I have been advised to wait 10 seconds or so after a bite before setting the hook. So far, this has had inconsistent results. What terminal tackle setup do you use, and do you wait before setting the hook? I’d love to know what’s worked for you, and what hasn’t.

That’s a fine fish you caught! Nice job!
