I just bought a betta and a small catfish. The lady at the pet store said it should be fine but I'm concerned because it seems like the betta likes to hide. Is that a normal response to a new tank?

Hard water
Tank was cycled for about a month but ammonia, Nitrite & nitrate were high yesterday. I did a 75% water change today with water conditioner. I have live plants and a lot of hiding places.
Also – when I got him his fins seem to be shredded from the fish store. He was in a 10 gallon with other fish.

The tank isn’t really cycled if you had high ammonia and nitrites and had to do a 75% water change to fix it…. Bad water quality is reason enough to have a fish hide around instead of exploring a new space.
How did you cycle it?
