Hello, for over the past two weeks i’ve been noticing my female betta has been getting a bit fat. the tank has been running since january but she’s living in it since ~march. I recently moved so I had to set it up again but ofc with lots of old water. The tank is 54L/14gal, around 25°c, running on a newer internal filter and an older external. Now to the problem: she seems extremely chunky, especially her belly. Her behavior hasn’t changed the slightest, she swims all around the tank, her pooping also seems normal. I’ve been looking around for what to do but i’m not sure what she actually has. This is her second day of fasting. she also lives with shrimps and kuhli loaches so i can never be sure if she doesn’t eat some of their plant based food. I just need advice and maybe some reassurance it’s not dropsy

her fins aren’t the best rn either but i think that comes from living w my forgetful mom for a long time:(

  1. Do you isolate her in a breeder box or cup when feeding the others? I’d for sure start doing that to be absolutely sure she truly is fasting and not gorging herself on other food. I do it with all of mine when feeding the community fish. Other than that, might be worth trying an epsom salt bath in case it isn’t caused by food.

  2. Yep, you should fast her. She’s constipated from what the stringy poop indicates. I would say fast for about a week and keep monitoring during that time to make sure she poops to get all that out of her.

  3. If it was just eggs I don’t think the skin would be as translucent there. Looks very abnormal like fluid is building up in her abdomen and causing bloating like with dropsy. Pretty hard to treat this kind of bloat. Fasting is unlikely to do anything but might as well try it. And then perhaps Epsom salt baths.
