Is this contraption thingamabobs’ sponges or whatever it is supposed to be submerged under water?

    if water is successfully pulled up and exits the outflow at the top there when the filter is tuned on, then you’re good,.

    that said, the filter carts like that these come with are really not the best filter media (and despite the instructions, should NEVER be exchanged out, just occasionally rinsed in non-chlorinated water). i like to use a mix of aquarium sponge and ceramic media instead.

  2. I’ve never used this type of filter, so I don’t know where its critical water line is, but it LOOKS like the intakes are underwater, so it should work properly. You likely need the waterline to stay between the intakes at the bottom and the lip at the top. The insides will fill up with water and then pour out the spout when it is operational.

    As has been pointed out, as long as the water’s coming out where it’s supposed to, and it’s not making weird noises like it is struggling, then it is working.
