Swapping a line from one spool to another and I was expecting to find a loop to loop connection when I reached the backing but found what I think is a nail knot instead. The shop put the backing and line on originally. Is this the best way to connect a fly line to backing for a saltwater set up? Will it hold if I repeat the same when I put it on my other spool? 8 wt line, typically used for stripers or other smaller game saltwater fishing

  1. That’ll hold. There’s usually a bimini knot for looped lines. I’m surprised there’s no loop for a 8wt. First time I’m seeing no loop for over 6wt.

  2. That looks like a pretty sloppy nail knot. I would try re-tying the nail knot or try an arbor knot.

  3. Depends on if the line has a welded loop or not. If so I do a loop to loop for easy removal later nail will hold just fine though.
