Aquariums: When is it time for a new filter? I just cleaned this thing a month ago, like SCRUBBED the whole thing (kept the media obvi). It’s about a year old

HOB need more cleaning, every two weeks to a month depending on how oversized It is.
A good cannister however can go months easily and filters better, so maybe consider that if possible

That’s just what HOB filters look like after a while. It’s pointless trying to keep everything in your tank perfectly clean because it’s an ecosystem and the ecosystem is gonna do what it wants.
But yeah I agree with the other comment, if you really don’t want any mess or filter visible, get a canister filter. Otherwise, so long as the pump still works on yours, buying a new filter would be arguably detrimental.

I have two aqua clear 70 filters for a 65 gallon tank, I will only change the carbon filters, take the foam and ceramic bio filter and rinse any debris out and put back in. Only have to do that every few months, typically when I notice a restriction in flow.

Honestly, nothing is wrong with it now, but if you don’t like the look of the algae coming out the intake, just take a toothbrush and scrape it off 🙂

cleaning once a month is pretty normal on a HOB filter. you can scrape off that algae every week when you do water changes if you are having algae buildup problems.
