Good morning. I’m semi-experienced in keeping smaller aquariums. The biggest I’ve had is a 10 gallon. For the last 2 years, we’ve had a betta, 2 mystery snails, and a nerite hanging out in a planted Fluval Flex 9. The betta died a few weeks ago.

Due to Helene, a lady in my hometown rehomed 3 tanks of various inhabitants. We thought this would be a good idea rather than purchase from a store. She gave us a planted 8 gallon tank with one female African dwarf frog, one cory, several tetras and supposedly one female betta who have lived in community “for awhile.” When we picked up the tank it actually contained two female bettas.

This is hella overstocked, correct? And the lone ADF is probably lonely (I kept those alone in a tank for a decade and always kept them in groups).

What size tank do I need to look for to combine those inhabitants + my snails + at least one more ADF? Space is limited and money is definitely tight due to Helene (we still don’t have power and have had a ton of expenses), but we want to be good stewards of these little new friends.

(I’m including a picture of our dear departed betta because my husband hasn’t been able to send pictures of the new tank inhabitants due to lack of internet post-Helene.)

Personally, I’d say split it all into three tanks.

First tank, a 15 gallon long or a standard 20 gallon, with six corys, a school of 6+ tetras, and a single female betta.

Second tank, the 8 gallon with one female betta.

Third tank, a 5 gallon with two ADFs.

The other option is to rehome them over the next couple of weeks until you just have the fish you want to keep.
