I recently got into fish keeping. I used an old tank that i used as a kid. I could’ve sworn it was pretty big when i was setting it up! I got a few glo danios and glo tetras. After a few weeks i realized my tank was only 15 liters (4 gallons). I have some serious issues with determining size by eye. What do i do? Do i just keep the fish? Do i give them away? I have a cafe nearby that has a huge fishtank with other tetras. I cant sell them because that’d take a lot of time. Do i buy a bigger tank?

This will probably get super downvoted. Im really sorry for what i did to these fish.

  1. It’s not the worst, and they can live there a little while as long as it’s cycled etc. You could set up a larger tank with plants and move them over, or keep them as they are for a while – while it’s a small volume, adding live plants and giving the fish more areas to hide generallly helps a lot.

I like small tanks, and generally make tanks smaller than people would advise, and have found that when they’re really densely planted and there are enough areas for fish to hide, they don’t get as stressed about smaller volumes as much.

You get upvoted because you obviously care. Look on facebook marketplace if you can’t buy a brand new bigger tank. I got a 55gallon and stand for $100 just be careful with how the silicon looks and feels. If the tank looks like crap it probably is.

  3. they ccan live there for a little while, but it WOULD be a good idea to start looking on facebook, craigslist, whathave you, for a second hand tank. my personal suggestion for begginers is a 20g, as i find it the easiest size for beginners to maintain, and still fit in their house on semi short notice. (seriously, the smaller the tank, the more difficult it is to ballance the chemical cycles.)

also, this isnt too late. you realized it before anything died, ergo, theres still time to fix it.
