Hello everyone! Beginner here. Just got a new filter that also adds oxygen to the water (blows little bubbles). You stick it on the side of a tank. Is it better to keep it higher or lower?

Also i feel like it might be too strong and pushing my fish. Is that normal or should i change it to a less powerful one?

  1. Really personal preference but I like to keep it low for more water circulation. I have a Venturi filter too. The bubbles don’t add any oxygen but they do move the surface where all the oxygenation happens. Strong is good, the fish will find a calm spot if they want

it depends on what you have in the tank, research whether your fish / inverts prefer fast or slow moving water

  3. Normal is considered filtration at a rate of 2 to 5 volumes of your aquarium per hour. That is, if your aquarium is, for example, 100 gallons, then a filter capacity of 200 to 500 gallons per hour is considered normal.

  4. Lower= circulates water better by moving detritus that has sunk.

Higher= more gas exchange because of more agitation at the surface. Also does well to not let any biofilm form.

Also, the bubbles themselves do not promote gas exchange themselves. By rising to the surface, popping and disturbing the water tension, it generates more surface area for gas exchange
