Ask other locals what the fish are biting. Where I’m at currently, bass are going after crank baits and flukes.

Start with the simplest fishing; a bobber, hook, lead weight to keep the hook down, and a worm. Try different levels of depth with the bait in a few places.

There are 2 great reasons to start with bobber fishing:

    1) you can catch almost anything on a worm and bobber

    2) the small bait fish you catch can be either put whole or cut up on a larger hook with a weight to keep the bait near the bottom of the lake. Throw it out deep and you’ll get a decent sized catfish.

After success with bobber fishing, then you extend out to lures. Personally, my experience with the spin baits are that they are a lure for a specific time/place/use. If you want to use lures then I would suggest starting with a variety of top water lures like a frog, popper, etc… the popper you just pull your rod back with a swift flick to get the lure to quickly disturb the top of the water. As long as you disturb the water and let it sit for a second or two afterwards then you are doing it right. Throw the lure near Lilly pads and other brush.

    Good luck!
