So I just got into saltwater fishing after getting into freshwater for 2 weeks but I bought this 309 Penn reel and a Penn mariner combo I’m good condition for $50 off Facebook marketplace. The problem is I didn’t know there’s different type of saltwater combos until I asked a fishing shop owner and I end up buying a offshore rod/reel when I needed a inshore one because I just don’t see myself ever really on boats. I tried it out with a friend the next day but the lures would constantly snap off for every good cast by the time I figured out how to. Do you think I should try again and maybe my knots weren’t good enough or is it just the rod or the reel I need to replace or should I just try to sell it and buy another one. (Also u think I got a good deal? They go close to $100 online new but a pawn store offered me $25)

  1. If your main issue is the lures flying off, you can fix this. Check your line, and check the weight of the lures you can cast with the rod. Use thicker line and learn some knots through youtube. But, for surfcasting you should have a rod perhaps in the 11-14’’ if you really wanna get the distance in and throw far.

Tldr: I do not think that its the rod or reel causing your lures to fly off.

Edit: Also the reel is Conventional reel, if you are beginner i would suggest spinning reel. So if you are buying your next set and you want to fish from land look for surfcasting rod 12-14’’ & 6-8000 reel spinning. Other than that, check youtube and practice.

  2. Either your throwing baits that are to heavy or the line is to weak. Also I believe a 6’6 rod is to short for inshore saltwater fishing like that from a beach. But hey what do I know I only freshwater fish haha.

But I have watched a few videos on how to get started just in case I got the chance and they always mention you should have a 10′ rod at least
