Hi I am respooling my zebco 404 spincast reel for the first time with Braid.
It came with 15 pound monofilament.

1.Is 40lb braid too much for just bass and small lake fishing?
2.What is the downside of such a strong line?
3. How strong should my leader be?

  1. I’ve never tried braid on a spincast reel. I think braid will work fine but I doubt Power Pro Original will. It is a 4 stead braid so it is not as smooth.

I think a smaller diameter 8 strand braid like Daiwa J-Braid in 20lb might work better. Don’t get a coated braid like Power Pro Super Slick V2 or SpiderWire either.

You know, I can’t say I’ve ever seen anyone use braid on a spincast reel. Curious to see how well it works.

To answer your questions, there are two main reasons why 40lb braid is used for bass fishing. 1, it helps pull fish through heavy vegetation. While the fish itself doesn’t weigh very much, the mass of vegetation that can get clump around the fish can add a lot of extra weight to the line, so the extra strength can help power through. Also, the texture of braid kinda saws through vegetation. 2, lighter braid is so thin that there can be issues with manageability and castability, especially with baitcasters, so heavier braid is often used to reduce backlash.

As for the leader, try to pick mono or flouro in a similar diameter to your mainline. I personally use 12 lb flouro with 40lb braid.
