Was recently hiking back from a high alpine lake and passed a smaller lake/pond and saw this guy hunkered down in what was essentially a bass bed created by two giant masses of algae/growth floating next to each other.
Thought to myself “I bet that fish will chase a leech if I can manage to not “line” him. This particular region is known for picky weary fish so I am doubtful, but hopeful!.
So I clipped off my chironomid trailer and managed to bomb a perfect roll cast just over the valley in which he sat, didn’t line him luckily, so I give it 2-3 dollar bill size strips just over the valley and sure enough, BOOM! he comes out of the depths and HAMMERS it!. Firm strip set and it’s on!. He’s twisting and turning trying to dive into the depths of the algae but I ain’t having it! We go back and forth for about 2-3 minutes until he eventually ends up in the hoop.
One of those moments where life is just on your side for a moment. Easily my favorite catch of the season. Had to put one of my dogs down today so I figured this would help distract me. Thanks for reading and give your dogs a big hug for me tonight.
