Hey there, long time lurker first time poster. I've had Gilbert for around a year now, at first he was in a 10 gallon tank and has been very very happy, it was a huge learning curve but one I've loved learning.
He's lived in my art studio for a while, and then my friend decided to move away and offered me her 5 neon tetras. Since Gilbert seemed perfectly docile, like the guy is lazy AF and seems friendly and calm (he never ever flares) etc I thought I would take them on. I only had a 10 gallon tank but since my friend was leaving soon I decided it was fine until I got a bigger space for them. I put them with Gilbert and they were absolutely fine, like it was shocking how fine they've been, they kept away from him and he kept away from them.
They stayed in the first tank for almost 2 months whilst I got their new 20 gallon tank and cycled it etc. I then moved them in. The first few days again were fine, but this morning I woke up and one of the neons was dead, he has no cuts or any signs of damage but I was wary and I'm glad I was because whilst I was watching the tank today I then noticed Gilbert hunting them down. He had never done this before in his old tank. So Im shocked, like obviously I know Bettas can be grumpy little guys but I just hadn't seen it before from him, it's like he snapped as soon as I put him in the new tank š
So now I've removed him from the tank and he's currently in a holding cell (aka his old tank).
My question is do you think I can put him back in the new tank once the other fish have adjusted?
I know they can be territorial so do you think he'll be less likely to attack the others if they already have their system in place?
I think maybe he's just stressed because it's a new tank but maybe I'm wrong haha any advice is appreciated š
