This is a Shimano FX 4000 reel, I'm not sure what size fish it's meant for but it's a big reel so maybe I could use it for walleye while on my canoe? Can it be used for salmon or large lake trout? I appreciate any advice or suggestions!

Yeah it can be used for salmon and lake trout if you really want. You are gunna probably want a medium heavy to heavy rod for it. Slap some 40 pound braid and call it a day. But at the end of the day you could use it for lighter applications as well. Medium rod..bit lighter line. Fishing for walleye or something.
