I bought a used Orvis 5W combo to start out, I think after using it the past few months it came with a WF sinking tip line.. it tapers from yellow to brown.. easy enough to cast, but does start sinking fairly quickly, can someone tell me what this set up is best for?

And what combo/line would be best for creek fishing for trout & bass? Thinking floating line for my next setup.. or something with two spools so I can have the option

  1. My first kit was a 5wt from Cabelas 21 years ago and it’s still going strong. Personally I would stick with a WF floating line and change your leaders for trout vs bass days.

  2. I fish a floating line for everything in freshwater and have for the last thirty years or more. Outfit varies by what one I happen to pick up or pull out of the car when I get there, water, weather, fish species…

Sink tips work for streamers and swinging flies in moving water. Not for dries or nymphs, in general.
