I used to turn my nose up at Brooke Trout. Because I’m afflicted with a desire to catch big fish that may have changed last weekend as I was fishing to a large pair of browns holding down a very spooky pool.
I put on a 2 inch streamer and one of them spooked on the first cast. The other was feeding on midges or something subsurface and and I thought I was going to have a perfect retrieve right into his path went out of nowhere this rookie crushed it.
Very beautiful and predacious fish, has me wanting to explore some of these high country waters that are told to harbor 12-15” brookies.
Of course I would have preferred a grab from the big brown, yet these brookies would be very fun on a light rod. Heck it was fun on a 6 weight.
Many people stick to dry flies up here but I found the brookies to go ape sheit for the micro streamers.
Next time after guiding I’ll probably tie one on with a 4-5wt and a sink tip. Lots of fun action!
