The other day I went fishing and right under my feet I saw the species I was targeting. I saw quite a few of them and they were feeding on the bait fish around at the time which I believe we're juvenile mullet.

I threw in my usual successful lures that matched the size of the baitfish but got no reaction. Tried different retrievals and rotated my lures with different types, different sizes and different colors. I got one bite on one of my lures but it didn't hook the fish well enough and it was unhooked shortly after. And after that not single bite again.

My question is what else could I have done? Or did I do everything right and I was just unlucky?

For some context I was fishing late at night during high tide. I attached a photo and I was throwing my lures parallel to the rocky bank where I circled.

I'm targeting Japanese sea bass. I usually catch them by casting out farther into the river where the current is stronger when the tide is much lower and I'm wading so it's my first time encountering this situation.

Thanks!
