My previous post was asking about a $200 combo (white river synch) Rob and reel wondering if I should return it, before opening it, to get a better rod.
Well I found this(I believe is a Gem) on FB marketplace, dude sold it for $25. So I am planning on returning the white water set. I've gotten a local shop to add new line. I cleaned it, added more grease and now feels and rewinds smooth! My plan is to use this to learn for a few days/weeks, then upgrade reel, then rod, etc.
What do you guys think?
Anyone know the brand or used these rods?
I am going out FLY fishing with this later for first time. Super exited to see how it all works.

  1. South bend were hardware store/chain sporting goods rods back in the day. If it’s intact it will likely cast fine although it may feel heavier and slower than a modern equivalent.

As for the automatic reel, I really don’t recommend them for a beginner. Very heavy, and it’s easy to push the button and end up with a fly jammed in the tiptop before you can let go.

  2. In my opinion, automatic reels are a nightmare. They’re heavy and break easily, especially if the spring wears out. I just don’t see any advantage to them. Black Beauty was the name of of South Bends mass produced bamboo rod from the 40s/50s so I guess they’ve kept the name. As long as the line matches the rod I guess for $25 you’ll be ok.
