Tried regular fishing and I felt like I needed to do more 😆 so I started to research fly fishing and it looks like exactly what I want. So I picked this combo, fly box and 4 flys to start practicing with. I was going to get to$40 combo from Walmart, but that didnt feel right. I wanted to spend a couple more $$ on a better one but not over $200 rod for my first Rod.
Is this okay? The bass pro guy pushed for this one. After I got to car, I researched more on brands and saw everyone pushing for Redington/TFSomething/avis. Bass only had a reddington but it was like $260.
I need advice, I'll definitely go return this and get something else, from somewhere else. I won't open this until I hear what the pro's have to say 😎😆

  1. I’d go for TFO NXT Black label and return everything. You probably want to start with woolys or nymphs and later dries, as they are more challenging, but rewarding. The forceps are mediocre, and want something more smooth as well (not serrated). The orvis starter kit is also decent; Reddington is the only one available at your store for a reason…

  2. If you have fun with it and it leads to you falling in love with the hobby, then yes it’s the right choice. If you’ve never cast a fly rod before just keep in mind that these lower cost combos are actually usually more difficult to cast due to lower quality materials. The fly line is usually really poor and it can lead to a harder time getting accurate long casts*. But as long as you’re learning it really doesn’t matter. If you do end up really liking fly fishing I can recommend the Reddington Path combo as being fairly decent for the price, it usually goes on sale for $100 around Christmas time.

*you can always replace the fly line with a higher quality one, which will make you realize casting is a lot easier than you initially thought.
