I’ve been fishing an old quarry that is now being used as a drainage/retention pond. I’ve noticed that all the Bass are all <1lb and skinny. Does this mean there’s too many of them and they’re outcompeting for forage fish? People don’t cull the pond because the mining company left a lot of their excavators and equipment underwater.
(I’m also a bank fisherman so there’s probably bigger ones in areas that can’t be accessed by foot)

  1. I’m not an expert but it looks to me like they’re indeed overpopulated and there isn’t enough forage for them all. Confirm with your DNR whether or not its safe to eat em, and if so bring a cooler and knife next time.

Fun story: there’s two ponds on my cousin’s farm, both stocked with hybrid bluegills and largemouth bass years ago but they haven’t been fished much recently. A few years ago one was raided by otters but they didn’t completely clean it out. It ended up being a good thing. Now that pond has 3-4lb bass swimming around whereas the pond left untouched has a zillion stunted 10″ bass.

that place looks dynamite for a kayak/jon boat. you should borrow one and get out there to some bassy lookin spots and see if there’s anything bigger.
