Ok, so the Ugly Stik GX2 combo is an Ugly Stik with a shit reel. Like, the rod is $50, the combo is $60. You got literally a $10 reel.
The Ugly Tuff combo on the other hand, is interesting, since it comes with the Ugly Tuff reel. It shares a lot of core similarities with the Penn Fierce. The reel design is very similar, and it rolls out of the same factory. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the parts are interchangeable. The Ugly Tuff reel differs from the Penn in body design, drag, and bearings used (the Penn has sealed bearings).
Now, here’s the thing – Is the Ugly Stik Ugly Tuff reel good? Ehh, it’s a very mediocre reel that is heavy and lacks refinement. However, with the metal body and frame it is probably the stiffest reel in the segment. And I suspect that it is reliable (after all, Ugly Stik warranties it for 7 years, in an industry where Shimano only warranties the Stella for 1).
