Hi guys! I’ve had a betta fish for 9 months now, he has a 10 gallon tank with live plants, and sand substrate. He is housed with a mystery snail and they seem to get along. I am moving here within the next couple of months and I plan on getting a 50 gallon tank to start a new aquarium, I thought about moving my betta to the 50 gallon and adding some more tank mates like Corey catfish or neon tetras, but I don’t know if he’d rather just be alone in his 20 gallon with his snail. Let me know what you guys recommend, I really want to make sure he’s happy and healthy and do his tank the right way.

Also on another note, he has been fin nipping really bad. I don’t know what keeps causing the fin nipping. They will grow back nice and long and then he nips again :/

Does he have proper resting areas near the surface of the water? Does he have he have good filtrations? Bettas need a good comfort spot to rest, especially long fin varieties. Self nipping will happen if your betta isn’t happy with the water flow versus his swim ability. Before you upgrade and give him tank mates, you need to look at how the betta can care for itself and how much it can swim before rest is needed

He would be happier in a 20 by himself. Male Bettas really shouldn’t be housed with any tankmates, especially if he’s never had tankmates, but a female you might be able to get away with it! It’s pretty risky to do any soft or community tank with bettas, even experienced keepers struggle with it. If you really want to try, I would definitely do more research on the topic
