Alarm set at 4am. Coffee maker auto brewing at 3:55.

I’m awake at 3:30 and don’t have time for my pillow. It’s Sunday morning, 55* in Payson, AZ and the fish are hungry. Some of them. I’ve been going to Willow Springs Lake for 30 years, and the lake looks fishy.

Ripping spinner baits and dragging jigs and t-rigs only got a couple bites from sunrise until 8. I had two hours before I left my cabin to go back to the heat of Scottsdale, and I refuse to get skunked only going for one or two species. Tactic change.

I love heavy rocky AZ bass fishing, don’t get me wrong. But…

I also have a beater 5’6” (Zebco Z-Cast 😏) with a Soloking Acura that rides in my trunk. 2g jig head, larva or mini grub paddle tails. 10lb braid. This setup has pulled out many largemouth, brook and rainbow trout, bluegill, and other sunfish. Everything likes little bug creatures 0-15ft off the bank.

Final count was 15 green sunfish and a brook trout, all on the short stick. These aren’t trophy bass, but they’re still fun little predators to hunt down. It’s true micro sight fishing.

With all of the filets combined, I caught have had a little lunch.

Tight lines, fish everywhere.
