Bigger cichlids love to ‘redecorate’ and digging holes is part off it. As long as it’s not too heavy they will move stuff around even wood pieces and pebbles also most are jerks to plants, will tear them apart for existing too closely to them. It’s natural cihclid behavior for those species and why I would never keep them in a bare bottom aquarium.
