I have a long history of spin fishing as well as fly fishing for everything from trout in little streams to bonefish on the ocean flats. But one thing always mystified me and that was freaking baitcaster reels. I had one about 20 years ago and I just DID NOT get it. I exploded a few spools into huge birds nests, put it back in the box and gave it away.
Curiosity got the better of me again and I bought a CHEAP ($50 all in) combo from Dicks last week. Watched a ton of youtube vids and read on here about how to use them and what to rig them up with.
Naturally I did get a few gnarly birds nests but I was able to mostly recover from them. An hour or two into it I was able to cast pretty reliably without issues. Caught this guy on a 4″ senko on a texas rig.
Very fun and now I understand the love for baitcasters!
