I have a 12 foot ugly stick with braided line that I plan to go fishing off of a beach that leads to open ocean in eastern Rhode Island. I have there and a “marsh” that has calmer waters that also lead to open ocean.

My question is, are these lures appropriate to catch something larger than baby blue fish? Is there a preference between locations?

Any tips are welcome! I’ve only caught a blue crab so far on my first attempt surf fishing.

I would have to see the beach to get a better idea, but I’ll say that I love those mag darters and used them off the beach in Florida with good effect. Just as a personal anecdote, it seemed to me that in the surf a really, really slow retrieve worked best for the mag darter. Again, that was just my situation and it may be different for you, but I would say if you’re not getting bites try changing up your retrieve with those. That popper might do well in the calmer area to help stir up some predators coming in to the marsh. I would say you’re good to go based on the information you’ve given, good luck!

  2. Get yourself some SP minnows in bone and chicken scratch color. Also maybe a pencil popper for top water. The two lures at the top of your pic are good for when there is current, but will catch blues and bass. I find the best times are at sunrise and sunset.
