Most fishermen keep fishing equipment in their garage or in the back of a pickup truck so that they’re handy and easily accessible just in case the weather breaks and the urge to get your line wet comes but the fishing line has a shelf life whether it’s on the reel or stored away and at today’s prices, can get quite expensive and shouldn’t be wasted. How long does fishing line last?

I think the real question is: how upset are you if you lose a fish due to line wear?

I know some tournament guys who change every season and will change in between tournaments if they feel the wore the line out. And others who will retie their lure after catching toothed fish (pike) just in case there are bite marks.
I will generally use the same line for 3-4 years (i have left braided line for longer :/ ), but i store my rods out of the sun when possible and don’t use them every weekend. Being cheap, I just check my line each season and take a look at the first 10-20 feet between sessions to detect any kinks, bite marks or wear. If there are any, I simply snip off that section.
