Guys I was at this pool section of the stream with about 7 brown trouts, they were actively rising and feeding on small flies. I was using a 5x tippet with little to no drag since the water wasn’t flowing fast. I started with small may flies about size 16, then to small hoppers, then cadis, then parachute Adam, then royal coachman, then all kinds of nymphs. For 1-2 hours I was there the trout would look at my fly and just ignore it and eat the flies on top of the water surface. At that point I just gave up and drank my coffee and watch them then went home. Anybody have any idea what I did wrong? I went everything by the book and they don’t want me 🙁

My guess was that this is a pretty high pressure area with lots of fly anglers, and the fish just pretty much remember all the flies by name. But what do you guys think?

  2. What was the water temp? Sometimes they just shutdown when it’s hot. Additionally if the fish was spoked from another spot to that one it won’t eat.

  3. They just weren’t interested in what you were peddling.

What small fly were they eating?

  4. When I get refusals consistently, I go smaller. Downsize tippet, tie a longer leader, or downsize the fly if it still matches the hatch. Longer leader will allow you to fish from further away, which can also help.

  5. Are you sure you had no drag? Even the smallest micro drag is very noticeable in water that slow.

Also, you don’t mention fishing an emerger. That would be my next fly if they don’t take up top.
