Picture for attention…As the title states I’ll be in Minnesota at the end of September and am thinking about throwing a line in the water for the first time since I was a teenager. I will be there for about a week in the Superior National forest area with planned stops at Voyageurs National Park and an overnight on Isle Royale. I’ll be driving from Pennsylvania and have a million questions but I’ll try to knock it down to 3 and then ask some follow ups so I don’t go on forever…

  1. I need to buy tackle and it seems like there is a lot of options on FB marketplace, but don’t know anything about what I’m looking at. I’ve been watching YouTube and googling info and it seems like the basic answer is a 6-7 foot rod slightly stiff rod in the event I get lucky enough to catch something bigger than a blue gill. It seems like there’s a lot of options out there on marketplace that fit this description, but what pointers can you give me to help me pick out a good quality option if I can find one? What kind of reel should I be looking for?

  2. I have a very nice fishing kayak with a pedal drive that to date I have only used for touring. It’s obviously quite large and I’m sure is going to have a significant impact on gas costs if I drive it all the way to MN. From a purely fishing perspective is this a must bring or should I expect that with minimum fishing knowledge I’m not going to improve my opportunities with the kayak anymore than casting from the shore? The videos and information I’ve gathered make it seem like a kayak will be necessary to hunt the big ones but starting from scratch with a month to go should I stop dreaming and resign myself to catching pan fish with a worm and bobber and consider it a bonus if I catch anything else? It seems like the fish finder is an important addition for searching the big lakes and I’m not planning on making that investment.

  3. Bait??? So many terms and options it seems overwhelming. My impression is it might be best to not even try too hard to figure out what to put on the end of my line before I get there. If I can get a decent rod and reel and pick up some tackle basics just go to a local shop and inquire what they recommend when I get there, is this a smart plan? It will obviously be the most expensive option which sucks but it will be less than buying cheap things off marketplace that I don’t use and then buying bait and lures when I get there anyway. Or should I at least buy a few of the most recommended things I’ve seen or read about?

Help!!! Thank you!
