I'm an absolute beginner and still trying to gather information before buying stuff. As much as possible, I would like to stick to the necessities first. I'm in Tokyo, and watch people fish urban rivers, and often (not all the time) see them using a landing net. Is it necessary to use one, or will I get by just lifting fish with a light spinning rod?

I was trying to look for local information. Unfortunately, I'm not proficient in the language yet.

A sample of Tokyo fishing (same river I plan on fishing)

  1. Net is going to be unnecessary until one time you hook something bigger and you start cursing yourself for not bringing net. Nets nowadays are small, lightweight, and easily transportable, so there is no reason not to bring one with you. In other words – yes, get a net, both for fish sake and yours
