This is probably a two-three week old shimano that my buddy got brand new from a tackle shop. There is a good amount of play in the reel im just not sure if theres a way to get it to sit still..theres obviously gonna be some movement in it but it feels like a lot for a new reel.

That is faulty. The oscillation block has probably broken. Return it to the tackle shop.
