New fly fisher, only been going to fisheries with stocked fish that are large. Currently use a 9ft 5wt. Went to fish my local river. (caught my first perch) and a few small brownies. The rod is overkill, feel no bend. What rod size would fish in a river like this?

Try out a glass rod. Same length unless you are getting caught on vegetation. I roll with a slow action 4wt 7’6”.
2-3wt glass would be great for those fish.
