I currently have 4 Neos, 6 Corys, and 8 Tetras in a 20 gallon high tank that is heavily planted. I am considering adopting a tank off FB marketplace.

The FB tank is 5 gallons and has “about 20 guppies”. Someone is picking up “some of the guppies” but I would get the rest and the tank.

The idea would be to take my shrimp out of the 20 gallon and make the 5 gallon a shrimp only tank, with the guppies going into the 20 gallon.

That would leave 6 Corys, 8 Tetras, and ~12 Guppies in the 20 gallon tank.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Guppies are very active and they also have higher bioload so that would be something to consider but it all comes down to your tank ecosystem if it can handle it and how much maintenance you’re willing to do. Guppies also live bearers so you will have lots of guppies babies.

I personally wouldn’t add 12 guppies, maybe less. We can all give our speculations what is “overstock” but there are many variables only you can decide.

  2. You should be able to find places online that have information about population density per gallon for different fish species. That might help you decide.
